SETTING UP
These instructions assume a basic familiarity with Macintosh interface conventions. If you’re just getting started with your computer, and find the operations described below confusing, please refer to the documentation that came with your computer.
To install this title, follow these steps:
1. Drag the Starry Night icon from the CD to your hard drive .
2. Open the System Extensions folder on the CD to show the extensions necessary or recommended for use with this title.
3. If you don’t already have these extensions installed, or are unsure, drag the appropriate icons one-by-one to your System Folder icon and drop them. The Macintosh will guide you through the rest of the installation. If you install any extensions, restart your computer to make them active.
GETTING STARTED
1. Make sure the Starry Night CD is in your CD-ROM drive.
2. Double-click the Starry Night icon on your hard drive.
ABOUT MEMORY
If you have a PowerMac with only 8 Mbytes of RAM installed, you’ll need to make sure you have enough memory available. Starry Night performs best if you have more than 4,800K of RAM (memory) free before you launch it. Making this much available can be difficult with certain models and system software combinations. Here’s how to tell whether you have enough RAM available:
1. Open the Memory control panel and make sure virtual memory is off. If you’re using some other form of memory extension, such as Connectix’s RAM Doubler™, turn it off. If you make changes, restart your Mac before proceeding.
5. Click once on the Starry Night icon on your hard drive so it is hilighted and Get Info on it either by choosing Get Info from the File menu or pressing -I. At the bottom right corner of the Get Info window you will see two boxes for allocating memory to the Starry Night program. One says "minimum size" and one says "preferred size." Change them both to 4,800K.
2. Quit all applications. (Print this document first if necessary.)
3. In the Finder, choose “About this Macintosh” from the Apple menu.
4. Note the “Largest Unused Block” figure. This is the amount of RAM you have available. If it is more than 4,800K, you’re fine. If it is less than 4,800K, however, you must take steps to trim the amount of memory your system software is using. This will make more available for Starry Night.
To trim your system software’s memory needs, you must temporarily disable the extensions and control panels you don’t need. If this isn’t something you’re comfortable with, refer to your Macintosh documentation, or seek the help of a knowledgeable friend.
HELP
There is on-line help available in Starry Night. From all sections of the program, you can click on the question mark (?) icon and a Help screen will appear which explains how to use the various screen elements.
To quit Starry Night, press -Q or select Quit from the Contents screen.
PERFORMANCE TIPS
We recommend that you quit out of all other programs before launching Starry Night.
